Anik Dutta’s tribute film to Satyajit Ray — Aparajito — had finally released. We at Sharmila Showhouse saw the film at the premiere and we will tell you 5 reasons why you shouldn’t give Aparajito a miss. In fact, if you miss this Bengali film, you would commit a crime.

Rename or original

Anik Dutta has changed the names of all the characters in the film. So, Satyajit Ray is Aparajito Ray, his wife Bijoya is Bimala, Bansi Chandragupta is Chandragupta Kitchlu, Apu becomes Manik, Durga is Uma and Pather Panchali is Pather Padabali. But what difference does it make. From the rain sequence in Pather Panchali to Apu, Ray holding cigarette in his hand or sketching in his room, it seems we are watching original Satyajit Ray remaking Pather Panchali for the new generation again. Oh, what an experience!

Jeetu Kamal all the way

You will root for Jeetu Kamal, who you might have seen on Bengali TV serials several times. But in Aparajito, he is Ray. He breathes, eats and sleeps Ray. From his gait, look to his attitude, Jeetu literally lives the character. If Aparajito is being praised, half the credit goes to this man.

Cheer for Somnath Kundu

Jeetu might have had the looks somewhat similar to Ray but then it needed the magic of makeup man Somnath Kundu and his prosthetics to do the rest of the job. Even Sandip Ray had difficulty to believe if he was watching his ‘baba’ or Jeetu in some scenes. Go watch to believe it.

Minute details

From Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves inspiring Ray to Martin Scorsese ringing up the Ray residence after watching Apu Trilogy, Dutta’s minute details in the script is worth praising. Also, kudos to the co-writers Sreeparna Mitra and Utsav Mukherjee for such a fitting tribute.

Photography and actors

Dutta had found an able cinematographer in Supratim Bhol, who recreated those timeless shots. And it wasn’t an easy task. The film has been shot in black-and-white which makes it even more nostalgic and easier to connect. Apart from Jeetu, other actors like Saayoni Ghosh, Debashis Roy, Ritwick Purkait, Shoaib Kabeer and Shounak Samanta also did a commendable job.
