Following the trend of Bollywood, a biopic on the life of the pioneer of Bengali theatre Shishir Kumar Bhaduri was announced recently in Kolkata.

Titled ‘Borobabu’, the Bengali film will be directed by Reshmi Mitra. The director said she couldn’t think of a better name as Shishir Bhadhuri used to be addressed by the artistes as ‘Borobabu’ of that era. ‘Borobabu’ in Bengali also means he was a supremo hence nothing could have been a better choice for the title of the film.

The screenplay and dialogues will be taken care by Ujjal Chattopadhyay. Bickram Ghosh will be in-charge of the music department and Suman Bhattacharyya of Danaos Production is handling the production.

According to the director, the biopic is not a complete historical replication but it takes the context of the legendary work and life of Shishir Bhadhuri, the towering personality of Bengali Theatre. The film mainly looks at his personal life, his relationship with Prabha Debi and Kankabati, those who acted in the theatre of Shishir Bhadhuri and how both the actresses contributed to the life of the thespian.

“Bengali film industry has not done enough in the biopic section. Hence, I thought of depicting the life of a notable personality with whom the Bengali audience will be able to connect. The entire team is excited to go on floors soon as we have vouched to make it one of a kind experience for our audience,” said Mitra.

Suman Bhattacharyya of Danaos production said, “Shishir Kumar revived our theatre in his own way. It required a lot of struggle, pain and bliss. His efforts are still remembered whenever we talk about Bengali theatre. We hope our first-of-its-kind endeavour turns out to be a milestone in the history of Indian Cinema.”
